چکیده

Modern database schemata are often large and complex, and a single user typically is afforded only limited access through a window, known as a view. The problem of supporting updates systematically through such views has long been known to be a difficult problem. Traditionally, the approach has been to limit the allowed updates to those which avoid or substantially limit so-called update anomalies; that is, changes which are not visible within the view itself. Unfortunately, the collection of such updates, which are defined by the so-called constant-complement strategy [BS81], [Heg04], is severely limited, and traditional extensions afford only a moderate increase in flexibility. In the research proposed here, a different approach to the view-update problem is taken. If a user of a given view cannot perform a given update without side effects, then that user must enlist the cooperation of other users, having update rights on other views, in such a way that all changes to the global database are visible to, and authorized by, at least one of the cooperating users.

A Simple Model of Negotiation for Cooperative Updates on Database Schema Components

Modern applications involving information systems often require the cooperation of several distinct users, and many models of such cooperation have arisen over the years. One way to model such situations is via a cooperative update on a database; that is, an update for which no single user has the necessary access rights, so that several users, each with distinct rights, must cooperate to achie...

Update Support for Database Views Via Cooperation

Support for updates to views of database schemata is typically very limited; only those changes which can be represented entirely within the view, or changes which involve only generic changes outside of the view, are permitted. In this work, a different point of view towards the viewupdate problem is taken. If a proposed update cannot be performed within the view, then rather than rejecting it...

Uniqueness of Update Strategies for Database Views

The problem of supporting updates to views of a database schema has been the focus of a substantial amount of research over the years. Since the mapping from base schema to view schema is seldom injective, there is usually a choice of possibilities for the reflection of view updates to base-schema updates. This work presents a solution to this problem which augments the constant-complement stra...

Foundations of Canonical Update Support for Closed Database Views

A closed view of a database schema is one which is totally encapsulated. Insofar as the user is concerned, the view is the database schema. The rest of the database system is not visible through the view, and is is not required for complete use of the view. Similarly, the updates which may be effected through the view have their scope limited entirely to that view. In this paper, we lay the mat...

Invariance Properties of the Constant-Complement View-Update Strategy

The constant-complement approach is one of the principal strategies for defining the reflections of database view updates. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, a self-contained presentation of the strategy itself is given. Second, two fundamental invariance problems are examined. In admissibility invariance, the question of when the translatability of a view update is independent of the...
